![]() Without a clear understanding of exactly what Dungeons & Dragons was and how it was played, Dear thought that Egbert might have been playing the game in the steam tunnels and gotten lost. Dear knew nothing about Dungeons & Dragons, nor did any of the students he spoke with about the disappearance. ![]() Dear, a Texas-based private investigator had been hired by Egbert's parents to search for him. That might have been the end of the story, had it not been for William Dear. Fearful of the consequences of his actions and desperate to avoid the media frenzy, he went to a friend's house and stayed "missing" for a month, until he eventually re-emerged, much to the relief of his parents and the local community. He woke up a day later to find the entire campus in an uproar and a very public search underway. Armed with a bottle of sleeping pills, he took a dose that he felt sure would end his life, sat down in the steam tunnels, and fell asleep. He had, in fact, gone down there in order to kill himself. ![]() A "Demonic" image from Dungeons & DragonsEgbert had ventured into the steam tunnels underneath the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan, not, as would later be surmised, to act out his Dungeons & Dragons fantasies.
